Stoke Gifford 165/8 beat Patchway CC 157/9 by 8 runs
Stoke Gifford 1st XI earned a hard-fought eight-run victory over Patchway CC in a dramatic Eighth Division North clash, powered by a breathtaking half-century from Lewis Jefferies and a game-changing bowling spell from Tom Meadows.
Having been put in to bat after Patchway won the toss, Stoke Gifford suffered an immediate setback. Harrison Murdoch-Mccormack made early inroads, removing Ryan Edwards for a duck and Matt Semple for two, before Casey Hull claimed Alex Burford for one. Reeling at 15/3, the home side badly needed stability.
Ian Semple provided exactly that, playing a crucial anchoring role at the top of the order. His patient 33 from 84 balls helped absorb the pressure and rebuilt the innings alongside Jefferies, taking the total to 76 before Semple was bowled by Mukesh Sharma.
Semple’s solid foundation allowed Jefferies to unleash a brilliant display of power hitting. The all-rounder transformed the momentum of the innings, smashing 92 from 76 balls in an entertaining knock that feature six boundaries and eight maximums. With support from Lewis Russell, who chipped in with a brisk 18, Jefferies lifted Stoke Gifford to a competitive 165/8 from their 34.5 overs before falling to James Williams.
Patchway’s chase began promisingly as openers Darren Williams (15) and Casey Hull (29) built a solid platform. However, Harry Black brought Stoke Gifford back into the contest by removing both openers, with catches taken by Ian Semple and Alex Burford. Alex Burford then struck to dismiss Mukesh Sharma for 21, caught by Jefferies.
The crucial turning point came through a superb spell from Tom Meadows. Bowled with accuracy and control, Meadows ripped through the middle order to finish with outstanding figures of 3-13 from his six overs. He bowled Mike Reed for four, had James Williams caught by Jefferies for 15, and caught Murdoch-Mccormack off his own bowling via Ian Semple. A sharp run out by Lewis Russell to remove Ashray Shetty and a wicket for Jefferies (1-14 from seven tight overs) saw Patchway slump from 89/2 to 116/8.
Just as Stoke Gifford looked set for a comfortable finish, Matthew Williams mounted a late counter-attack for the visitors. Smashed two fours and three sixes in a rapid 40 not out from 26 balls, Williams gave Patchway a late lifeline. Shabir Azizi claimed the ninth wicket, stumping Ethan Ware off the bowling of Ian Semple, but Williams kept fighting alongside Leigh Portch.
Ultimately, the home side held their nerve. Patchway reached 157/9 as their 35 overs expired, leaving Stoke Gifford victorious in a fantastic, hard-fought contest.
