Stoke Gifford CC - 1st XI 179/9 beat Golden Hill CC - 5th XI 161/9 by 18 runs
Stoke Gifford 1st XI secured a hard-fought 18-run victory away against Golden Hill CC 5th XI at Shine Sports Ground in Eighth Division North. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors had to overcome an early setback and a late-innings wobble before a disciplined bowling performance sealed the win.
The afternoon did not begin smoothly for Stoke Gifford, as Matt Semple fell without scoring to leave the side at 1-0. However, Lewis Jefferies and Henry Birt joined forces to rebuild the innings in grand style. Jefferies was in superb touch, striking 12 boundaries and a six in a fluent 86 off just 81 deliveries. Birt played a patient anchor role at the other end, grinding out 40 from 112 balls. Together, they pushed the score to 116 before Jefferies was bowled by Max Chaplin. Dave Stubbs then injected vital momentum with a quickfire 27 off 21 balls, including three fours and a six, carrying the score to 162/3.
Golden Hill fought back strongly in the closing stages, led by Alex Taylor, who took 4/39 in an eight-over spell. Taylor tore through the middle and lower order as Stoke Gifford suffered a major collapse, losing six wickets for just 12 runs to slide from 162/3 to 174/9. Joe Black (5 not out) and Rich Stadden (0 not out) managed to see out the full 40 overs, bringing the final total to 179/9.
Defending 179, Stoke Gifford’s bowlers made swift early inroads. Joe Black produced an outstanding opening spell, bowling eight overs with four maidens and taking 3/13. He claimed the first wicket by taking a catch off his own bowling to remove Tom Burgess for six, while Harry Black bowled Lucy Warren for a duck to leave Golden Hill at 10/2. Mark Lippiatt maintained the pressure, removing Ellis Camwell (16), Alex Taylor (4), and Callum Middleton (8) to finish with figures of 3/34 and reduce the hosts to 77/5.
Golden Hill’s middle order offered resistance through Harry Rosen, who played a fine unbeaten knock of 75 from 106 balls. Jim Fitzgerald added 24 before Joe Black bowled him, triggering a dramatic middle-order collapse. Black bowled Alfie Hobson for a duck on the same score of 107, and Lewis Jefferies immediately followed up by bowling both Chris Ball and Max Chaplin without scoring. Golden Hill lost four wickets for just one run, falling from 107/5 to 108/9.
Rosen and Ella Hobson (23 not out) mounted a brave final-wicket stand, adding 53 unbroken runs, but the target proved beyond their reach. Golden Hill finished their 40 overs on 161/9, handing Stoke Gifford a well-earned victory.
