Frenchay CC 171 all out lost to Stoke Gifford 172/7 by 3 wickets
Stoke Gifford 1st XI produced a sensational fightback at The Bob Stone Ground, recovering from a perilous 70/6 to seal a remarkable three-wicket victory over Frenchay CC in Eighth Division North.
Having won the toss and elected to field, Stoke Gifford made steady early inroads. Joe Black set the tone by removing opener Chris Hallett for 3 before Lewis Jefferies struck to dismiss Daniel Adamson for 5, both held by Matt Semple. Frenchay opener Jack Evans offered counter-attacking resistance with a brisk 31 from 36 balls, including three fours and a six, before Joe Black bowled him to leave the hosts 53/3.
Oliver Stokes was the mainstay of the Frenchay innings, crafting a brilliant 68 off 80 deliveries with 11 boundaries and a six. However, Stoke Gifford maintained tight control through the middle overs. Jamie Black bowled a disciplined eight-over spell (2/37), removing Chris Davis (5) caught by Ryan Edwards before bowling Daniel Strange (0). Imogen Stokes ground out 21 before offering a return catch to Shabir Asizi, who bowled beautifully to finish with 2/25 off his eight overs. Asizi also dismissed Tom Toogood (9), caught again by Semple, who claimed four catches in the field. Franks Jamie (2/41) provided the decisive moment by bowling Oliver Stokes with the score at 130/6 and later had Michael Wyatt (15) caught by Semple, before a sharp run out from Edwards brought Frenchay’s innings to a close at 171 in 37.3 overs.
Chasing 172, Stoke Gifford’s reply started lively with Matt Semple striking five boundaries in a quickfire 24 off 31 balls. However, Frenchay’s Tom Toogood threw the contest wide open with a devastating spell. Toogood bowled Henry Birt (6) and Ryan Edwards (0) at 32/2, before going on to dismiss both Semple and Lewis Jefferies (11) on his way to superb figures of 4/29. When Phil Brocklehurst chimed in to bowl Shabir Asizi (7) and trap Jamie Black lbw for 2, Stoke Gifford had lost six wickets for just 70 runs, their chances hanging by a thread.
What followed was a masterclass in calm composure from Sam Horner and Franks Jamie. The seventh-wicket pair transformed the game with a magnificent 81-run partnership, absorbing the pressure before taking the attack back to the hosts. Jamie compiled a vital 40 off 66 balls with five fours, while Horner anchored the chase with an unbeaten 47 off 55 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries. By the time Oliver Stokes bowled Jamie with 21 runs still required at 151/7, the balance had tipped. Robbie Seward (4*) joined Horner to keep a cool head and steer Stoke Gifford across the line in the 36th over, completing an unforgettable victory built on grit and lower-order fight.
