Easton Cuttlefish CC 181/8, Match Abandoned
Stoke Gifford 1st XI travelled to the Bristol Civil Service Sports Club for an Eighth Division North clash with Easton Cuttlefish CC, only for the match to be abandoned before the run chase could begin. Having won the toss and elected to field, Stoke Gifford produced a disciplined display with the ball, but they were ultimately denied the opportunity to press for victory.
The afternoon began in dream fashion for the visitors, driven by an extraordinary opening spell from Joe Black and Lewis Jefferies. Black was simply unplayable, bowling with relentless accuracy to dismantle the top order. He got Stoke Gifford off to a flying start by having Daniel Thomas caught by Alex Burford, before clean bowling both Neil S Boulton and Alex Jeffcutt to leave the hosts reeling at 14 for 3. At the other end, Jefferies was remarkably tight, conceding a mere eight runs from his eight overs, including four maidens, to lock down the runs from the outset.
When Alex Burford struck to have Robert Taylor caught by Lewis Russell, the home side found themselves in deep trouble at 27 for 4. Harry Black then joined the attack and trapped Michael Roe-French lbw to reduce Easton Cuttlefish to 53 for 5.
However, amidst the collapse, opener Shrey Brahmbhatt produced a remarkable counter-attack for the hosts. Weathering the early storm, Brahmbhatt anchored the middle order and batted through the entire innings. Even as Joe Black returned to break a emerging partnership by bowling Curtis Kline for 10—finishing with brilliant figures of 4 for 7 from eight overs, including five maidens—Brahmbhatt kept the scoreboard moving.
Lewis Russell added two late wickets to the tally, having Evan Gibbons caught by Jamie Franks and Harry May caught by Burford. Yet Brahmbhatt stood firm, striking 16 fours and a six on his way to an unbeaten 107 off 125 deliveries. Boosted by 39 extras, Easton Cuttlefish closed their 40 overs on 181 for 8.
Set a target of 182, Stoke Gifford were poised for an intriguing chase, but the match was abandoned before the 1st XI could begin their innings. While the lack of a conclusion was a disappointment, Stoke Gifford will take great encouragement from their formidable performance in the field, highlighted by Joe Black's sensational four-wicket haul.
