Coalpit Heath CC 231/5 beat Stoke Gifford CC 211 by 20 runs
Stoke Gifford 1st XI fell just short in a competitive Eighth Division North encounter against Coalpit Heath CC 3rd XI, despite a brilliant counter-attacking half-century from Lewis Jefferies.
Winning the toss and choosing to bowl at home, Stoke Gifford made an immediate impression with the ball. Fast bowler Harry Black made early strikes, taking two wickets including the clean bowling of Ollie Baldwin and catching Will Robinson off Mark Lippiatt's hands before both openers could get off the mark.
Coalpit Heath's middle order offered strong resistance, however. Paul Giddings launched a brisk recovery, striking four boundaries and four sixes in his 58 off 49 balls, combining with Jonathan Billington (37) in a 86-run stand. Rich Stadden eventually broke the partnership, removing Giddings via a catch from Ryan Edwards, before Alex Burford bowled Jonathan Billington to leave the match delicately poised at 116/3.
An unbeaten 51 from Gregory Billington and 48 from Jack Carrington then swung the momentum back to the visitors, pushing their target up to 231/5 off their 40 overs. Joe Black bowled with fantastic discipline for Stoke Gifford, conceding just 30 runs from his eight overs with two maidens, while Jefferies was equally economical, taking 1/32 from his eight.
In response, Stoke Gifford suffered a nightmare start. Coalpit Heath's opening attack made swift inroads as Rich Stadden (8), Harry Black (21), Ryan Edwards (9), and Mark Lippiatt (6) all departed cheaply, leaving the home side reeling at 49/4.
That brought Jefferies and Matt Semple together for a crucial fifth-wicket partnership. The duo launched a spirited fightback, rebuilding the chase with a fine 116-run stand. Semple anchored the innings with a patient 32 off 57 deliveries, while Jefferies played with freedom, smashing nine fours and two sixes in a quickfire 75 from 67 balls.
The match swung back in Coalpit Heath's favour when Semple was caught off Waseem Ali with the score on 165. Jefferies followed shortly after, caught off David Johnson at 184/6. Despite 14 runs from Jamie Black, Stoke Gifford's lower order was unable to close the gap as Waseem Ali completed a spell of 3/32. The home side were ultimately bowled out for 211 in 37.2 overs, finishing 20 runs short of their target.
